Swansea Bay Summer 5k Series and Fun Run
14th June 2018!
The sun came out! We love our British weather, testing and teasing us until the last minute! Will it rain, will it stop play! But nope the wind and rain subsided and the sun shone on the 2nd 5k and Fun Run event of the Swansea Bay 2018 series! And with the sun the participants came out in their racing glory ready to take part in either the 1k or 2.5k Fun Run for Children 11 years and under and our 5k series for 11 years of age and over!
We were delighted to see children as young as 4 taking part in the fun run which started at 6pm from 360 Beach & Watersports. The 1k and 2.5k run started at the same time, each run led by a PPRC volunteer who took them along the course followed by a PPRC volunteer back runner. The 1k course took them along the seafront heading towards Mumbles, running 500metres out and 500metres back along the same path. The 2.5k run took the participants further along the path opposite Swansea University coming back along the same path once they had reached the bottom of Hospital Hill. Sorry to the children who missed out on sweets, we anticipated the same number of children as on the 10th May and to our delight there were just fewer than 50 children…..we will be better prepared for the final fun run on the 12th July!
After the Fun Run came the 5k race which started at 7pm with just under 170 participants taking part. Wonderful to see so many entrants from juniors, local running clubs, recreational runners in our community and from clubs afar afield as Glouster joining us again for the 2nd race in the series. Our race officials started the race and the competitors did not waste any time getting off the starting block with the first male and winner of the 2nd series overall our local hero Matthew Rees in an incredible 15.50 seconds! Thank you to Adam Runacres who saved the day with and ran to get pins for the last entrants – thank you Adam we hope you got your second beer in appreciation!
Trophies were won for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed Juniors, Female and Male categories with wine for the adults donated by ND John Wine Merchants and a voucher for the juniors donated by our hosts 360 Beach & Watersports. For our winners who could not stay until the end we will make sure you receive them at the last event on the 12th July where there will be a trophy for the overall winner of each category of the series. The presentations will take place slightly earlier on the 12th July – as soon as the last person has crossed the finish line!
The 5k series includes 3 events the last one will take place on the 12th July. For each 5k event there are trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed runners in the Junior (11 to 15 years of age), Female and Male categories and on the last event the overall winner for each category is announced. There will be an overall winner for the series for each category!
The aim of the Swansea Bay Summer 5k Series and Fun Run is to being the running community of Swansea together, clubs and fun runners, to take part in an achievable distance under race conditions. Participants can aim to improve their time over the 3 events. During the events 360 also put on activities for the children to enjoy on the beach while their parents can take part in the 5k. There is also entertainment from Matt Cook during the evening. Come down on the 12th July from 5pm for the kids fun run and 6pm for the 5k event.
HUGE Thanks to all participants, volunteers from PPRC, videographer – Paul and Carol Jenning, photographer – Jo Ashburner, 360 staff and our sponsors Persimmon Homes, Active Leisure, Verdis, Gemeg, Home from Home & Falck as well as ND John Wines providing the wine for the whole series. We have already reached our target of raising over £3000 for the Paul Popham Fund to support kidney patients to compete in the transplant games – so thank you one and all.
